THE HOLY JOURNEY TO EGYPT - LEAVING THE DESERT

THE HOLY FAMILY AT MATAREYA

“ Eventually, the Holy Family left the desert behind them and made their way southwards, crossing the Nile to its eastern bank, and heading for Matareya and Ain Shams. In Matareya a sycamore fig tree still stands to this days called “Mary`s tree” for the Family is believed to have rested in its shade. Here, too, the Infant Jesus caused water to flow from a spring, from which He drank and blessed, and in which the Virgin washed His clothes.

When St. Mary poured the water on the ground a balsam tree grew. Beside the healing and pain-soothing properties balsam has, its essence is used in the preparation of the Holy Oil or Myron that has been consecrated since the time of the apostles.

Today the site of Mary`s tree is visited by many Egyptians, both Christians and Muslims, and tourists from all over the world.
