THE HOLY JOURNEY TO EGYPT - MAADI

The Church of the Holy Virgin St. Mary at Maadi

His church stands in a beautiful area on the Nile about ten kilometers south of Old Cairo. According to the tradition, the Holy Family sailed from this site to Upper Egypt. St. Joseph was able to finance the travel by boat using the gold, frankincense and myrrh that the three wise men had presented to the Christ the Child in Bethlehem.

The church is remarkable for it three beehive-shaped domes that covers the sanctuary. The church went through several restorations. It has three sanctuaries the central one is dedicated to the Virgin St. Mary, the northern one is dedicated St. Paul, St. Antony and St. Shenute, and the southern is dedicated ST. George, St. Menas, and St. Dimyana.

On Friday, March 12, 1976 a deacon picked up a Holy Bible floating on the Nile. It was opened on the page of the prophecy of Isaiah 19:25 “Blessed be Egypt my people”. Now the Arabic Bible, which was printed in Beirut in 1864, is on exhibit in the northern side chapel.
